Pushkin Prize-giving Day was celebrated on
Wednesday 27th May at the Royal Marine Hotel,
Dun Laoghaire. The event was an occasion to
celebrate the work undertaken by school from
all over Dublin and just one of many throughout
the country.
The theme ’The tree of life’ was taken by the
children and explored through literature and the
arts.
METNS 5th class took part in this project and
were represented by a group of 10 children on
the day. Mr Curran was very proud of the high
standard of work by 5th class.
On hand to review the work and interview the
children was author Marita Conlon Mc Kenna.
Her praise for the work from METNS was
glowing and their attention to detail applauded.
Jordan and Jack read their poetry beautifully.
Well done 5th class.
The project is on view at METNS, outside the
PE Hall.

Council as they have chosen his poem They Came on the
High Seasto be part of Dublin’s application to Unesco for
recognition as a World City of literature. Part of his work will

THEY CAME ON THE HIGH SEAS
THEY CAME FROM THE NORTH
LIKE DRAGONS ON THE WAVE
TO USE OUR ISLAND TO PORT.
THEIR LONGSHIPS HELD FIFTY
OR MAYBE MORE
MANY BOATS LANDED
THE VIKINGS ARE ASHORE
THEIR FACES WERE FIERCE
WITH HORNS ON THEIR HEAD
AND IF YOU HAD SEEN THEM
YOU’D WISH YOU WERE DEAD.
THEY CONQUERED OUR LAND
THEN THEY TOOK PITY
AND HELPED US BUILD
DUBLIN’S FAIR CITY.
THEY TOOK OVER OUR LAND
WITH THEIR SWORDS AND THEIR SHIELDS
AND DROVE ALL THE FARMERS
OUT OF THEIR FIELDS
BUT THEY SETTLED HERE
TO HUNT AND FISH
AND NOW WE’RE KNOWN
AS THE FIGHTING IRISH.

They came on the high seas
They came from the north
Like dragons on the wave
To use our island to port.
Their longships held fifty
Or maybe more
Many boats landed
The vikings are ashore
Their faces were fierce
With horns on their head
And if you had seen them
You’d wish you were dead.
They conquered our land
Then they took pity
And helped us build
Dublin’s fair city.

They took over our land
With their swords and their shields
And drove all the farmers
Out of their fields
But they settled here
To hunt and fish
And now we’re known
As the fighting irish.
